It’s Never Too Late to Start: Kepi & Michael’s Story

When Kepi first met Joanna back in 2018, she didn’t see a gym owner — she saw a lifeline.

At the time, Kepi and Michael were both overweight, unhealthy, and feeling the effects of aging in ways that were hard to ignore. Kepi was 63, recovering from knee surgery, struggling with mobility, and deeply self-conscious about moving her body. Getting up off the floor without help felt impossible. Michael felt run down, out of shape, and unsure what the future would look like if nothing changed.

They were scared. And they joined anyway.

Starting Scared — and Showing Up Anyway

Like many adults later in life, both Kepi and Michael had fears about starting. Performance anxiety. Worry about being the “least fit” in the room. Doubt about whether they could keep going.

But from the beginning, coaching made the difference.

Instead of being pushed into workouts they weren’t ready for, everything was scaled and structured so they could move safely, build confidence, and progress at their own pace. Slowly, they realized something important:

They were capable.

And every workout left them feeling better than when they walked in.

A Turning Point: Choosing Life and Strength

For Kepi, the biggest shift didn’t come from loving exercise — she admits she still doesn’t! Her happy place is reading, resting, and spending time with friends. But after surviving breast cancer, multiple surgeries, and long periods of weakness, something clicked.

On the other side of that experience, she felt alive — and determined to be as strong and independent as possible at 70.

For Michael, the “click” happened after almost every workout. Each session proved that movement wasn’t breaking him down — it was building him up. His energy improved. His confidence grew. His self-esteem returned.

Strength That Shows Up in Everyday Life

Today, Kepi and Michael train three days a week for about 45 minutes. Nothing extreme. Nothing reckless. Just consistent strength training, simple conditioning, and steady progress.

And the results go far beyond weight loss.

Kepi now:

  • Moves confidently on uneven ground
  • Gets up and down off the floor with ease
  • Dances, jogs, and walks without fear
  • Feels stable on cruise ships, travel roads, and in the ocean

Michael:

  • Has dramatically more energy
  • Feels confident, capable, and dignified
  • Wakes up happier and more motivated
  • Knows he’s taking care of his body the right way

One unexpected and powerful moment in Michael’s journey came when training revealed something deeper. As he got stronger, he noticed a limitation that led him to seek medical testing. Doctors discovered a serious cardiovascular blockage. Because he had been training consistently, his heart had adapted and created alternate pathways — likely preventing a major heart event.

He underwent a triple bypass and believes strongly that exercise helped save his life.

The Message They Want You to Hear

If you’re 65+ and wondering whether it’s “too late,” Kepi and Michael are very clear:

“Start now, and start where you are.”
“You don’t need to be a certain way to begin.”
“Stop thinking about it and take that step.”

Fitness at this stage of life isn’t about chasing extremes. It’s about strength, balance, confidence, and being able to enjoy everything Maui has to offer — walking the beach, traveling, getting into the ocean, and living fully without fear.
