Fall Back Into Fitness: How to Build Core Strength After Summer

A7C08620

Summer’s pau—but that doesn’t mean your fitness goals are too.
Whether you spent the last few months surfing, relaxing, or taking a break from the gym, now is the perfect time to reset, refocus, and rebuild—especially when it comes to your core.

So… what’s the best exercise for abs?

Let’s clear things up: There’s no single “magic” move that will give you a six-pack. But there is a proven strategy that works—and it’s what we use with our clients right here on Maui at All Kine Community & Fitness.

Here’s how to build stronger, more defined abs this fall.

1. Abs Are Built in the Kitchen (Especially After Summer)

Let’s be real—grindz, shave ice, and summer BBQs might have added a little extra fluff around the middle. Happens to the best of us.

If you want your abs to show, nutrition is key. You already have abs—lowering your body fat percentage is how you reveal them.

That starts with:

  • Eating whole, nutrient-dense foods
  • Cutting down on added sugars and processed snacks
  • Staying hydrated (yes, even as the weather cools)
  • Getting support from a nutrition coach if you need help staying consistent

At All Kine, we offer nutrition coaching designed specifically for Maui locals—no starvation diets, just real food and real results.

2. Train Your Whole Body, Not Just Your Abs

Crunches alone won’t get the job done.

Compound, full-body movements using free weights or your own bodyweight are the real secret to building a strong, functional core. These movements engage your abs, back, glutes, and deep stabilizing muscles.

Try exercises like:

  • Standing overhead presses
  • Squats
  • Deadlifts
  • Kettlebell carries
  • Push-ups and rows

💥 These moves force your core to stabilize your spine while your whole body works—just like real life here on Maui, whether you’re hiking ʻĪao, paddling out, or hauling gear.

Bonus: These exercises burn more calories than isolated ab movements, helping you shed fat while building strength.

3. Target the Core With Smart, Effective Movements

Once you’ve got your eating habits and full-body workouts locked in, add dedicated core training 2–3x per week to really level up.

Here’s a quick list of tried-and-true ab exercises we program at All Kine:

  • ✅ Planks (front + side)
  • ✅ Bicycle crunches
  • ✅ Leg raises & flutter kicks
  • ✅ Ab roll-outs
  • ✅ Bird dogs & glute bridges
  • ✅ Russian twists & wood choppers
  • ✅ Toes-to-bar or knees-to-elbows (CrossFit-style)
  • ✅ Turkish get-ups (a full-body core crusher!)

Not sure where to start? Begin with 1–3 sets of 8–12 reps, 2–3 times a week, and rotate exercises to keep it fresh. Don’t forget to give your abs a day to rest between sessions!

Pro tip: A coach can help you build a smart routine that balances front, back, and side core work, so you stay strong and injury-free.

Fall Is the Season for Comebacks

Now that the summer fun is winding down, it’s time to recommit to yourself.

At All Kine Community & Fitness, we help Maui locals of all ages build stronger cores, lose fat, and feel confident again—with a mix of:

  • Weight training
